Trisha waiting for a call from Kamal

It is speculated that Trisha is leading the race for Kamal’s lead lady for the next KSR flick. But when a reality check was done on this, Trisha said that she has absolutely no clue about her being in the race. “If it happens, I would be the happiest person on planet earth,” Trisha was quoted as saying. “I am waiting for Kamal to call me with the news,” she added.

Trisha was earlier said to star in Kamal’s mammoth project Marmayogi which was later shelved owing to financial reasons. For Marmayogi, Trisha also reportedly learnt to play the Tamil martial art Silambam, apart from taking a course on the pronunciation of ancient Tamil.

Hansika’s de-stressing secrets

The best way to effectively de-stress myself is to repeatedly chant, Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo. I’m a strong follower of Buddhism and chanting this greatly calms me down.

Other than that there is nothing better than to go to a spa every once in a while to re-energise my batteries and and relax at the same time. Whenever I get free time, I make it a point to spend it with my family and friends by going out for dinners, movies or long drives. Listening to music and photography are also great stressbusters.

New NRI Babe makes waves in Tollywood

Ever since Shekhar Kammula delivered three back-to-back hits — Anand, Godavari and Happy Days — a role in his film is considered a passport to stardom in Tollywood. And the two-films-old actor, Priya Anand, bagged just that when she was chosen to play the lead opposite Rana Daggubati in the much-hyped film, Leader.

The 20-something NRI has already become the toast of the industry and has signed the dotted line for another film, Rama Rama Krishna Krishna, opposite Ram, even before her debut film has hit the theatres.

Talking about her entry into showbiz, Priya says, “I came down from the US to visit my grandparents in Chennai and I was approached for a film. After acting in Vaamanan and Pugaippadam in Tamil, I got my first movie offer from the Telugu film industry, which I rejected. I wanted my debut to be a more meaningful film. That’s when I decided to audition for Shekhar Kammula’s Leader. It feels good to be part of a movie which promises to have a social impact and aims at getting the audience to think. It’s not often that we make such movies,” she says.

Unlike other imports, Priya dubs for her own films. “I grew up in Hyderabad and Chennai. Since my mom is a Tamilian and dad a Telugu, we spoke English at home. But I grew up watching Telugu cinema, so it wasn’t tough for me to pick up the language. I like dubbing for my own movies as it gives an authenticity to my roles. It also adds to my credibility as an actress in both Telugu and Tamil industries.”

The young actress is not just wowing the audiences, but her friendly demanour is also a big hit with the cast and crew. “Rana was awesome to work with and we became one big happy family on the sets. I think it’s important to get along with everyone on the sets as the rapport you share with people will certainly reflect on the output. Everyone encouraged me a lot and I couldn’t have learnt Telugu so quickly, if not for their support,” says Priya Anand, who is still coping with her new-found stardom. “My family finds it hard to believe that I romance South Indian stars onscreen, despite the fact that I don’t speak the language at home.”

And if films don’t work, Priya even has a plan B in place. “I have studied journalism and if I ever quit films, I can always get into production.”(DC)

Salman’s fan base is shocking!

You’d think that the way Salman Khan has conducted his love hate relationship with the media; they’d reserve any undue praise? Quite the opposite we’d say.

The man is hugely popular. Agreed, that Shah Rukh and Aamir got extra taalis, but the catcalls went through the roof when Salman appeared on screen with some deaf and mute kids doing a very touching part of Phir Mile Sur. Like they say, everyone loves a ‘bad boy’? But is Sallu really that? Try telling that to all the kids that Salman supports and spends time with — there will probably be mob fury by little tots to protect their Veer. Wotsay Katz? You agree? (TNN)

Deepika smokes herbal cigarettes

Deepika Padukone, who was forced to take up smoking for her role in Karthik Calling Karthik, was afraid that she might get addicted in the process. To prevent that from happening, she switched to smoking herbal cigarettes for her scenes.

The actress says, “After much insistence on the director’s part, I agreed to smoke in the first place. But the biggest challenge was to learn how to do it right, to lend authenticity to my character. I was also terrified that I’d get addicted, so I opted to smoke herbal cigarettes. But I hated the whole experience. It is one of the worst addictions.

I whouldn’t mind being no. 1: NTR Jr

It’s not everyday that you get to see the reclusive superstar NTR Junior in action. Literally. NTR who’s just recovered from a bad back was kicking some serious butt on location of his new film being shot in the old city. After a prolonged action sequence, as the young actor settled down for a long overdue chat, he seemed in good humour.

Probably some of that can be ascribed to the great opening of his new film which is currently playing in the theatres. For someone whose films have had a poor run at the BO whenever they’ve released during Sankranti, this film is breaking a festival jinx for him. “I’ve never believed in the superstition myself. I think those films were bad and that’s why they flopped. I’ll make no excuses for films that haven’t worked,” he says.

The outspoken 26-year-old star says his film shouldn’t even be compared to the previous big money-spinner Maghadeera. “Despite overwhelming response across the globe, it’s too early to predict if my film will become the highest grosser. In addition our film also had competition from a couple of other releases,” he reasons. A contender for the top slot, does he believe in the number game? “Not at all. Acting is my passion. While I am not desperate to become the No.1 in T-town, if I actually became one, I wouldn’t mind it either. Who would? Being the first among equals always gives you a high,” he says.

Quiz him about why he’s so publicity shy and the actor confesses that he’s wary of talking to the “media” and can’t pretend “to be good to strangers just to promote my work. If I don’t like someone I can’t pretend otherwise. So, it’s best to let my work do all the talking instead.”

For someone who was bed-ridden for four months due to a bad back injury, he confesses that he had to get back to work because he was “worried about the growing number of well-wishers who felt I’d never be able to dance in my life. I know they were genuinely concerned about my health, but I took it up as a challenge and got back in action. I’d call it a rebirth of sorts for me,” he says misty-eyed. The reignman who “touched the peaks and lows at a very young age” insists that he’s “worked on my drawbacks and fine-tuned my strengths to emerge as a good human being,” he says.

Coming up next are Brindavanam and Shakti. “The former is a wholesome family entertainer and the latter is a unique concept,” he informs. And much like a lot of his contemporaries, the young actor now intends to do a couple of films a year. “My grandad used to do 15 films in a year, I can never be like that. We need to cater to the changing tastes of the discerning Gen Z audience,” he points out. Is that also because there aren’t too many larger-than-life roles being written in the Telugu filmdom? “Well, there are a lot of scripts, some of which are very good. But filmmakers are reluctant to take risks. After my blockbuster Simhadri, I was apprehensive about doing larger-than-life roles too, but I began to enjoy doing them after a while,” he says with a chuckle.

Beyond the arc lights, NTR isn’t really the partying type. “I dislike pubbing and prefer a quiet evening with my friends at some place that’s not teeming with people. For me, my home is my retreat. I like nothing better than listening to music — it can be a great stress-buster,” he says.

And marriage and romance will have to wait. “There’s no time for either. I am too busy with my first love —acting — for now,” he says as if on cue. (TNN)

Bikini is not a Big Deal

Looks like it’s sizzle season in K-town. Tamil actresses are reinventing themselves and how! The latest one to have traded her simple image toplay the glam doll is Vimala Raman. After her coy girl-next-door act in Evaraina Eppudaina, she’s all set to dazzle in a brand new sexy avatar for her new film. “Hey, you can’t expect an NRI girl to wear traditional outfits. The role demanded the kind of clothes I wore,” she says defensively.

But wasn’t sporting a bikini taking things too far? Vimala refutes that charge and says that she wasn’t seeking cheap publicity. She also adds that she hasn’t gone overboard. “I wore a bikini just for a song sequence…it’s no big deal,” she says. Considering that women in Tollywood hardly get to do meaty roles, is this new image meant to compete with hotties Anushka, Ileana and Nayanthara, in the skin show race? “It would be unfair to compare me with established actresses. I also dislike being typecast,” she says firmly.

Vimala has now signed a refreshing role in Gayam 2 and has just wrapped up a Kannada film (Aptha Rakshaka) with the late Vishnuvardhan. “My knowledge of classical dance came handy for the role. Working with the late Vishnuvardhan was a memorable experience,” she rewinds.

The last few months have been hectic for Vimala, who’s done some money-spinning Mollywood films. “Those films showcased my acting repertoire and I received some major awards for them. While awards are perks, the thing that matters the most is audience appreciation,” she points out.

The Sydney-born Tamilian is now yearning to return to do a film in Chennai. “I am hoping to sign a big Kollywood film one of these days,”she says. (TOI)

Mayabazar, one of the all-time favorite films in Tollywood is all set to re-release in Color version on January 30th.The classic movie Mayabazar starring legendary actors is made into color. The original version which was released in 1957 was directed by K.V.Reddy and had one of the best cast ensemble ever seen on silver screen. The cast included names such as NTR, ANR, Savithri, S.V.Ranga Rao and Relangi among many other stars. Vijaya Productions produced this film. The total run time of the film has been decreased by 10 minutes since they couldn’t restore certain scenes which were badly damaged. It took more than 3 hectic years to convert the black-and-white negatives to color prints, using a special software by Goldstone Technologies Limited. Around 600 artists and technicians made this dream project come true at GoldStone Technologies Limited. They have used almost 1.67 lakh shades including colors of European and American influence.

Geetha Arts Banner is producing the mega film ‘Badrinath’ with Allu Arjun in the direction of sensational director V V Vinayak. Earlier Hansika Motwani was considered for the heroine. But the latest buzz is that milky white beauty Tamanna has been selected to play the role. This would be her straight film in Telugu after ‘Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam.’ The actress has been performing exceeding well in Tamil in the recent past and kept herself busy there. Now, this would be a better opportunity for her to reach mass audience in T-Town.

Ghantasala, SVR, Chiru Spl Article in South Scope

TELUGU The great singer Ghantasala participated in the Quit India movement in 1942, and served 18 months in prison at Alipore and Bellary jails. He was convicted for rendering six patriotic songs. Each song fetched him three months' imprisonment. S V Ranga Rao was adjudged best actor at the 1964 Jakarta International Film Festival for his portrayal of Keechaka in Narthansala. It is the first time that an Indian actor received an international award in acting.

Surprisingly, this fact is not wellknown among many people.

After getting the award he felt very sad that his own country couldn't honour his talent even though it is accepted by all Indian film fraternity that no one can ever match to SVR's acting prowess. SVR and Gummadi went to the International Film Festival in Spain for the film Raju Peda where they met Richard Attenborough. SVR played Peda (meaning `poor') and, Attenborough commented that SVR should have played the `king'.

SVR's charisma worked even on strangers. Chiranjeevi is the first south Indian actor to have been invited to attend the Oscar Awards presentation in 1987. TAMIL Amin AR Rahman, AR Rahman's six year old son has lent his voice for a song which is still `in progress'. The song is to be used for the Hollywood film Couples Retreat. The film is a romantic comedy directed by Peter Billingsley and stars Vince Vaughn, Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman in lead roles. It is expected to release by the end of 2009.

Ride on the Side Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada South Scope

The Mani Ratnam directed Nayagan is undoubtedly one of the best gangster films ever made in India. But the Time Magazine listed the Kamal Hassan starrer among the 100 greatest films ever. The list was compiled by respected movie critics Richard Schickel and Richard Corliss in 2005.

It generated significant attention, receiving 7.8 million hits in its first week alone.
K Balachander, the director who has an uncanny knack of creating stars, first met Rajnikant at the film institute, where he was a student.

Balachander glanced at the dark young man and crisply asked him to meet him in his office the next day. When Rajnikant walked into his office gingerly, Balachander informed him he was going to act in his next film. Overwhelmed by the unexpected offer from a big director, Rajnikant just could not believe his ears. Later, Balachander confided in his close friend and associate Ananthu, "There is a fire in the young man's eyes. One day he will take Tamil Nadu by storm." How true the prediction turned out! Kamal Hassan has the distinction of being the actor with the most number of films submitted by India in contest for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Divya Spandana is considered to be the `golden girl' in the Kannada film industry as she has the success rate of close to 90 per cent in her career. Her luck, however, did not follow her to Tamil cinema, where her first film Kuthu bombed at the box office. Bangarada Manushya (1970) is the first Kannada film to have run for over two years, at the State Theatre in Bangalore. Kishan Shrikanth, aged nine is the youngest director in the world to have directed a movie. He directed the Kannada film C/o Footpath, about an orphaned boy.
In June 2006, Malayalam cinema made history with the release of its first-ever digital film, Moonnamathoral. While the digital format may not be new in the film world, what the distributors of this movie did different was to beam the film through satellite into the smaller and more distant theatres in the state. Mohanlal's 2008 film Akashagopuram, directed by P Kumaran was the most expensive Malayalam film ever, budgeted at about Rs 10 crore. The film, which was shot entirely in London, is adapted from Henrik Ibsen's play The Master Builder. Despite all the hype, however, the film played for barely two weeks in halls. Chemmeen (1965) directed by Ramu Karyat was the first South Indian film to bag the President's Golden Lotus Award for the best film. It is based on the famous novel of the same name by Malayalam writer Takazhi Shivashanakara Pillai. Actor Mohanlal has singlehandedly distributed more films in his home state of Kerala than the NFDC did.

These are usually films belonging to the parallel cinema genre, such as Santosh Sivan's The Terrorist.

SRK gets Vivek, Abhi talking

On Hrithik Roshan’s birthday (January 9), Mumbai Mirror reported that the party carried on at Shah Rukh Khan’s house Mannat late into the night.

He not only played a good host but also brought two warring factions together - Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s ex-boyfriend Vivek Oberoi.

We hear that like a true gentleman, he helped ease the discomfort between Abhishek and Vivek. Shah Rukh sensed the tension and managed to create a lighter atmosphere, without explicitly making his intentions known.

A source close to Vivek says, “Shah Rukh certainly did not want any of his guests to feel tense at his home. Besides, he had personally invited Abhishek, Aishwarya, Vivek and many others to Mannat, when they met at Hrithik’s birthday party in Juhu.”

It may be recalled that only a day prior to this, Vivek had taken the initiative to speak to Aishwarya’s father-in-law Amitabh at an awards function saying, “Sir, it has been a long time, aap to aaj kal baat hi nahin karte.” In turn, Amitabh had given him a patient ear and also shared a few laughs with him.

Ranbir’s American girlfriend!

The secret is out. Ranbir Kapoor’s American girlfriend in Raajneeti, the one he abandons to pursue his family’s political dynastic ambitions in India, is 30-year-old Sarah Thompson Kane. Sarah is best known for her role in Cruel Intentions 2 and for playing South African cricketer Hansie Cronje’s wife in the 2008 biopic Hansie. She was chosen to play Ranbir’s American girl in Raajneeti after a great deal of deliberation. “We auditioned nearly 30 girls before we selected Sarah. She was right for the part. It’s a substantial role and we needed an actress who could act and would look compatible with Ranbir,” says director Prakash Jha.

In the film, Sarah and Ranbir fall in love in an American university. She later follows him to India. This is the first Caucasian actress that Ranbir has shot with. Apparently the vibes were so thanda between the two that the director decided to scrap the kissing scene between them.

My father is a real ‘Veer’: Salman

Bollywood star Salman Khan, who is awaiting the release of his pet project Veer, says his father, acclaimed screenplay writer Salim Khan, is a real Veer (braveheart).

"My father is a real ’Veer’ as he has always faced tough times with courage and I salute him for that," Salman said in a press statement.

"I remember, when I was young, I flunked in maths. I was terrified to face my father and disclose the fact to him. Somehow I gathered guts to tell him; to which he politely reacted and told me not to worry and spoil my vacations. Exams are not the real test. Still, ’beta agli baar zara dhyaan se padhna (Study well the next time),’" added Salman.

Veer has been penned by Salman himself. It is a story set in colonial India and encapsulates a period when the British enslaved India with their divide and rule policy and kings and nawabs fell for it, except for the Pindaris who preferred death to dishonour and fought till their last breath.

Salman plays one of the bravest and strongest Pindari soldiers in the film, which releases on Jan 22.(IANS)

Shilpa gets a wedding gift from Brown

The British House of Commons is not known for holding high-profile marriage receptions, that too for a Bollywood star. And the British Prime Minister is rarely seen giving wedding gifts to celebrity brides.

But that’s exactly what happened to Shilpa Shetty when British MP Keith Vaz hosted a reception for her and hubby Raj Kundra at the House of Commons in London.

Shilpa writes on her blog: "( I) was really touched by the memorabilia personally signed by Prime Minister (of Britain) Gordon Brown, given to us as a wedding present." Shilpa adds that she didn’t expect the glam party.

"When Vaz told us he wanted to do it at the House of Commons, I thought he was joking but he actually did it! So despite the snow storm - and we nearly thought we wouldn’t make it since a lot of cars had broken down - (I) wouldn’t miss it for the world. "So in my (designer) Manish Malhotra sari, nearly frozen (beauty comes with pain) we were trudging along in the snow, (and) reached the venue," writes Shilpa, who has been on a long honeymoon with Kundra.

The actress, looking resplendent in an embroidered brocade sari and precious stone jewellery, made a glamorous entry with Kundra and Vaz.

Kundra was thankful to Vaz who he said "was a dear friend" of theirs.

Despite a heavy snowfall in London followed by long traffic jams, the actress felt it was "worth all the effort (to attend the event) as we were just so humbled by the honour, the warmth and graciousness extended to us." Also, Shilpa went around taking a close look at the residence of the Speaker of the House of Commons.

The actress adds: "(We) also got the opportunity of getting to know the articulate Honourable Mr. Speaker and his wife Sally." On her tour inside the House of Commons, she writes: They (the Speaker and his wife) "very sweetly gave us a tour of their residence in the House of Commons, (I) have to applaud him for his memory and humility and humour, (they) both (are) such wonderful people."

Shilpa has already enjoyed a high-profile visit to the House of Commons way back in 2007.

At that time too, Shilpa attended a reception at the House of Commons by invitation of Vaz to meet the then- prime minister Tony Blair.

On the professional front, Shilpa has only one film in hand - Desire, an Indo-Chinese film. "(I) can’t wait to come back to warm Mumbai back to work soon, got to dub for my Indo-Chinese project Desire," she writes.

Tollywood lacks good scripts

While the rest of Tollywood’s top stars believe in releasing only one film a year, amidst much fanfare, actor Venkatesh chooses to defy conventions. Even though the buzz surrounding his performance in Eenadu is yet to die down, the actor is gearing up for another release. But this time, he’s sticking to the tried and tested genre which has become his trademark — comedy.

“Comedies are always crowd pullers. The young audience love rom-coms. Moreover, I think I’m a natural in this genre,” says Venkatesh, who hopes to recreate the box office magic of films like Malleswari and Nuvvu Naaku Nachavu with his upcoming film, Namo Venkatesha.

Barring the few rom-coms that he enjoys doing, Venkatesh says there is a lack of good stories in the industry. “I used to do a lot of films earlier. But after watching good films made in the other industries, few local scripts interest me. I guess every actor goes through this phase. As actors, we have to compromise and make the most of whatever comes our way,” says Venkatesh, who feels that Tollywood needs to become more organised.

“Another problem plaguing the industry now is that every film exceeds its budget. While there are many who blame this on the high renumeration that stars demand, truth is that there is lack of planning here. Disorganised methods of working cost the filmmakers extra,” he says.

Content with the comfort zone he has created for himself in an industry full of newcomers, the religious actor attributes all his success to “divinity.” In fact, Venkatesh is planning to go on a break to “discover” himself after the release of his film. “Sometimes I want to be cut off from this world and give time to the inner self. I think it’s as important as giving time to your career and family. I will soon take a break to travel and meet spiritual gurus across the country,” says the actor.(DC)

Chidambaram put Endhiran back on track

It took the permission of the home minister, P. Chidambaram, to help Rajnikanth shoot an action sequence for his film Endhiran, directed by Shankar, also starring Aishwarya Rai.

Rajni was to shoot the sequence in Lonavla on the train in the famous railway heritage corridor. But the location they picked was a restricted one where shooting wasn’t allowed. No filmmaker was able to procure permission to shoot there.

Shankar, Rajnikanth and Aishwarya Rai however, pulled some strings and special permission was procured from the minister, P. Chidambaram. Peter Heinz choreographed the action sequence, which was shot on the train.

Incidentally, a portion of the film Johnny Gaddaar, too was to be canned at the same location, but due to lack of permission, the shoot had to be cancelled.(DC)

Tollywood calling for Padukone

Bengaluru girl Sanchita Padukone has just signed her first Telugu film and she will be playing the lead role. Her first Kannada film Raavana did not create ripples, but it seems her career is soaring, outside Kannada film industry.

“I want to do more Kannada films and even dub in my own voice. But I was terribly disappointed with the response to my Kannada film. Unfortunately the pre-release publicity of the film failed to create hype. Anyways I am happy that I was noticed in the film and some of the reviews showed me in a positive light. Now, I have signed a new Telugu film with Raja in the lead. I will be playing the lead character of Madhubala and the film will be directed by a young debutant director Srinivas,” says Sanchita Padukone who will start shooting for the film on January 16 in Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, Sanchita also plays the lead role in the Tamil film Pillaiyaar Theru, Kadaisi Veedu, the shooting for which has been completed and a song has to be picturised. She is happy that her first Tamil film Vettai Kaaran has been doing well after its release.

“I play the role of a simple girl in Pillaiyaar Theru, Kadaisi Veedu. Ramesh Jiththan plays the lead in this film. It has all the commercial ingredients and there are several good songs and fights in the film. I really enjoyed working in the film. Most of the film was shot in Munnar in Kerala,” says Sanchita Padukone.

Allu arjun six pack in south scope six pack heros in south s

six pack heros in south scope

If you have em, flaunt em! But how to get em? Ahem! Now, that's a big deal! Or is it? Blame it on Allu Arjun even though Surya stormed into the film industry with his six pack sculpted to perfection greek god - bod.
But for some inexplicable reason, it didn't catch the fancy of the nation despite setting the screen afire. Perhaps Suriya's fantasy bod didn't seem accessible to an average man. Or they probably thought he was born that way.
But when Arjun converted his near skin and bones exterior to a well sculpted six pack abs and bared them with gay abandon, almost every member of the masculine gender in the audience woke up. The realization that it is achievable dawned on the star obsessed nation.
It's an entirely overlooked matter that our neighbourhood rickshawalas or construction workers always had them but had no clue that they were assets worth possessing. Hunks on screen inspire some real life action in guys of all ages to not give up on those ohso-wonderful six pack dreams but in reality it's not as hunky dory as it seems discovers Southscope
The positive fall out of the phenomenon is the recent trend of flabby Indian men hitting the treadmill with a never before gusto. Arjun's `in your face' presence on all channels crooning away to glory saw not just young guys but also middle aged mamas head to the gym around the corner. Result: gym owners are laughing all the way to their banks even as their list of members enrolling for instant six pack programmes is increasing each passing hour.

But hey, wait, here's a word or a page of caution for all you six and eight pack aspirants from Khan, Surya's personal trainer. Suriya, even though the latest to join the six pack brigade, has one of the best bodies in this side of the vindhyas. His Ahmed Haider pose has fast gained popularity the reason being he appears well-proportioned.
Southscope offers his million buck mantra for you, straight from the star trainer's diary: Developing six packs and keeping them for life is no breeze, if you please. To begin with, you must understand even if you're a fitness buff, that your abs are a group of muscles just like your chest, shoulders, arms or legs. Don't, for a moment, dream of developing them in isolation. More importantly, the six packs these stars flaunt are for certain characters in their movies. And here's the clincher they work at it because they are being paid millions or sometimes billions for that one role. Their faces are their fortune and their bodies their wealth.
If you look at the health factor - you need to have as little as six per cent body fat to sport a chiseled six pack which is next to torture for the human body. Fat is the storehouse for energy though that doesn't mean you need to be obese.
Ideal washboard abs are those that show as a six pack when warmed up.
For this, those of you who haven't ever stepped into a gym will have to wait for a minimum of at least six months - don't get taken in by those fancy advertisements. Remember, to tone muscles that have been dormant for ever takes a sustained dedicated effort.
The other point is, it isn't all about working out. The body has to be well energised. Now, don't grab a can of Red bull or Power Horse as you read this. We mean food and that again doesn't mean your thayir satham or kodi koora. What you need is a wellbalanced diet. Did you know that for muscles to remain and appear healthy the proportion is 70 per cent food and 30 per cent workouts? So no matter how hard you try either to get huge or lean, food is your mantra. Get it to get fit, okay?
