Hrithik sings again!

It seems Hrithik Roshan is planning to make a strong foothold in the music industry too. After making his singing debut in ’Kites’, he once again went behind the mike for a song in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ’Guzaarish’.

"Hrithik has sung a song in ’Guzaarish’. His singing is improving day by day and he has sung so well that it’s even better than the song he sung in ’Kites’," Hrithik’s uncle and composer Rajesh Roshan told IANS.

"Hrithik is a very hardworking person and I feel that it won’t be any harm if he sings one song a film to let out his creativity as a singer," he added.

The 36-year-old has crooned an English song ’Kites in the sky’ in his forthcoming film ’Kites’.

Action Replay is Ash’s first full-on comedy

Aishwarya Rai has three very different films coming up this year, but director Vipul Shah says his film Action Replay will bring to the audiences her first full-fledged comedy.

"Of course comedy, which is the hardest genre to do, is not taken seriously at the awards. But in my film, Aishwarya has done comedy for the first time. She may have attempted it here and there earlier. But this is her first full-fledged comedy role. But she’s welcome to get the awards for her other two releases…I don’t mind," Shah said.

Mani Ratnam’s Raavan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish are the other two films she will be doing this year.

While Bhansali’s Guzaarish is set to release in November, Raavan and Action Replay, which also stars Akshay Kumar, are due to hit the theatres in quick succession within a month.

While Raavan is slated for a June 18 release, Shah is all set to release his film in July, arguing that the two films are completely different in mood, theme and treatment.

But the filmmaker had a bitter experience last year when his Salman Khan-starrer London Dreams released a month after the actor’s home production Main Aur Mrs.Khanna.

Now apparently Shah plans to sit down with Mani Ratnam and figure out a release strategy whereby neither film suffers.

He said: "Raavan and Action Replay are very different films. And I thought I’d release (mine) in July. But I think I’ll now discuss it with Aishwarya and Mani Ratnam. We need to work as one big family in this industry.

"Besides, I still have a song to shoot whereas Raavan is complete. I’ve yet to figure out when I can shoot it because both Aishwarya and Akshay are constantly travelling. We were supposed to shoot it earlier this year in the snow in Manali. Now we may go higher up at the Rohtang Pass or change the location for the song completely," the director added.

Ram Gopal Varma plans a 3D horror film

Director-producer Ram Gopal Varma confesses he always had an obsession to scare people since his childhood and would stand behind doors and say "bhooo" to someone entering a room.

After horror film Phoonk2, releasing Friday, Varma plans a 3D scary film to make the audiences "experience" fear. Varma also says he loves to catch the audience off guard through his narrative.

"I always had this obsession to scare people. When I was a kid, I used to stand behind the door and say ’bhoooo’ to someone entering the room and now I am making (horror) films," Varma said.

He is keen to make a 3D horror film as that would give the audience the illusion of being part of the film and experience the horror along with the cast.

"Technically, it would work. While watching a horror film sitting in a theatre you are seeing it happen to someone else on the screen. But a 3D film is a medium which makes you feel you are there with them, on location may be. The illusion it creates is because of the third dimension. Because of that I think the technique has terrific application in a horror film, if rightly done," Varma said.

For Phoonk 2, a sequel to Phoonk, Varma has bet upon debutant director Milind Gadagkar, who conceived the idea of the film.

"When I was busy in Rakta Charitra, Milind came up with this idea, and it excited me a lot. Milind has been with me for some time and I believe he is an able director, so I went ahead with it," said Varma.

Asked if he has given any value inputs for the film, Varma said, "No, I didn’t give any input. Creatively it is completely his (Milind’s) brainchild."

Talking about the technical aspects of making horror films, he says for this genre "the camera, background score and sound effects have a huge contribution in the film. For drama or comedy, it can pretty much work on performances, and writing, but horror films have many manipulative techniques where you are manipulating the audience’s emotion. The movement of the camera constantly plays around with the audience’s psychology. When I took interest in films, I wanted to show off. So I thought the best thing to do is a horror film."

In the first quarter of 2010, Bollywood has streamed out a number of back-to-back horror films, Click, Rokkk and Shaapit. The makers of these films claim to have "abandoned superficial scares and worked for far more insidious and intellectual level" fear.

How would Phoonk 2 stand apart from the other films?

"The more you connect with the audience… if a person seeing the film can feel that it can happen to him or he finds some similarity with something he has heard of, the connectivity factor works best in horror films," said Varma.

He explains that for a horror film to work, "a story is needed to create that moment of fear. I think predominantly it is the emotion that is created in a given time".

"You can make 1,000 films on a haunted house. If you are able to create that moment… remember in Bhoot there were not more than six scary scenes. People are not bothered what’s happening in between. They were waiting for the next scare. I think horror films work on that count," he added.

Varma has completed 70 per cent shooting of Rakta Charitra which is a biopic on a character in south India.

Ajay Devgn gets grungy look for Golmaal 3

Versatile actor Ajay Devgn has got an grungy makeover for his upcoming comedy Golmaal 3.

Conceptualised by director Rohit Shetty, the actor’s new avatar brings out his edgy side for his character Gopal thanks to a rugged style, diamond ear studs, tattoos and cropped hair. The styling for the same has been done by Navin Shetty.

"I wanted all the characters to have different looks in Golmaal 3. For Ajay, I wanted a character that looked different from everything he has done. He has been working hard on his body a lot, so we will have him flaunting his body (in the movie)," Shetty said in a statement.

"He plays a hyper character who loses his temper very quickly because of which everyone is scared of him. People never know what he will laugh at or get angry about," he added.

Shetty has also styled the other cast members of the movie like Kareena Kapoor’s tomboy look, Tusshar Kapoor’s "tapori" look and Arshad Warsi’s look which is yet to be disclosed.

The tattoos for Ajay’s new look have been designed by Hakim Aalim’s studio.

"Vishwas from my salon designed the tattoo on Ajay’s neck but the concept and choice was Ajay’s. The tattoo is of a Celtic or tribal trishul (trident). It is daring to have a tattoo on the neck, even if it’s temporary. No actor in India has done it on the neck," said Aalim.

"We have given Ajay the buzz cut, a stubble and overall, a more macho, masculine and grungy look than he normally sports," he added.

Also starring Kunal Khemu, Golmaal 3 follows Golmaal (2006) and Golmaal Returns (2008).

Produced by Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision Ltd, the comic caper is currently being shot in Goa.(IANS)
