Power Star inspires IIT Topper

We are aware that, Hyderabad boy Prudhvi Teja has topped the list of successful candidates in IIT-JEE 2011 examination, where over 4.85 lakh students appeared for 9,600 seats in 15 IITs.

IIT topper Prudhvi Teja's name has been trending in top social networking sites. The teenage boy has no clue about why his name has become the 'trend-setter'. A normal kid like many, Prudhvi Teja isn’t a book worm. He watches films and idolizes the heroes in them.

Apparently, Prudhvi Teja is a die hard fan of Power Star Pawan Kalyan and he wishes to meet him some day. "My favorite hero is Pawan Kalyan and I like his 'Tammudu' film very much. I identify myself with Subbu character in it. Me too used to bunk classes like Subbu but wanted to achieve something big in life like him," said Teja in an interview.

"Pawan Kalyan was inspired by his brother and won gold medal in Tammudu. Likewise I want to achieve gold medal in Mathematics and Science Olympiad," he added. We wish Pawan Kalyan makes time to meet this kid who could well reach greater heights with that "power booster"!

Interview with Chakri Toleti

Background:
My father Mr. Thambu happened to be a good friend of directors like K Viswanath, K Balachandar, Bhagyaraj, Bharati Raja and Jandhyala. He used to help the directors in scripts and dialogues. I acted in the role of a photographer boy in Sagara Sangamam movie when I was about 8 years old because K Viswanath insisted that I should play that role. I acted in around 15 movies and my last movie as a child artist was Paila Pachis.

I left for the USA to do bachelors in film course in University of Central Florida. I focussed on technology and vfx while doing film course. After the completion of my degree, I joined Disney and worked in VFX department. I worked in Disney for three years. My brother was working at Microsoft. He resigned that job and we together stated a new venture called Cytura, which specializes in content management systems for websites and portals. We sold it off after a couple of years. Then we started another company called Galvanon which caters to self service software in healthcare and media entertainment. I sold it off after a few years and joined NCR (National Cash Registrer), which is a 6 billion dollar company. My contract with that company is getting over now.
Why didn’t you immediately pursue film direction after graduation?
I was looking for the right opportunity in movies and meanwhile I was running my own entrepreneurial organization.

How did Eenadu happen?
Kamal Hassan came to USA to shoot for Dasavatharam movie. I helped the unit setting up shoot in Florida. I arranged the team for action/stunt sequences out there. I also acted as a friend of Kamal Hassan in that movie where his BMW is stolen. I was also involved with script discussions with Kamal Hassan. I happened to see ‘A Wednesday’ movie and immensely liked it. As we were discussing about that script, Kamal Hassan asked me to direct that Telugu/Tamil remake of the movie. That is how Eenadu happened.

How did you manage to do a bilingual in Telugu/Tamil with your debut film?
I do feel that language is never an issue to direct a movie. The nuanaces and sensibilities change from language to language. The line between the sensibilities used to be thick earlier and it is becoming a thin line now. Some of the films crossed cultures. We shot both versions separately. The actors were different and we reshot each and every scene in Telugu and Tamil separately. Tamil version has Kamal Hassan and Mohan Lal. Telugu version has Kamal Hassan and Venkatesh. The Tamil version is titled as Unnaipol Oruvan which means ‘someone like you’. We tried to make a sensible film by retaining the soul of the original.

How easy/difficult is it to do a remake?
It is easy because pre-production of the film is already done. It is difficult because, you have to retain the soul of the original with different set of parameters.

Hindi version is done by character actors and you have stars in Telugu/Tamil version?
Kamal Hassan is one of the best actors in India. Venkatesh is a very good actor. I don’t think expectations due to their star value and image will be a hindrance to this film because we are projecting these two fine actors as two important characters in the movie. I would like to thank Venkatesh for going out of his star status and comfortable zone to act in this movie.

Tell us about the RED camera employed in this movie?
I own three RED cameras. Kamal Hassan owns one RED camera. RED is a digital camera with 4k resolution. It was my RED camera that was employed in India for the first time when we did a trail shoot of one of Kamal Hassan’s future projects around 2 years back. Though it was employed in a few Indian films later, nobody in India made a comprehensive use of RED camera earlier in mainstream cinema. I always feel that we should pick the technology as per the demand of the story. The story of Eenadu will be better narrated if we employ RED camera because it helps you in being more creative. It is more flexible than any traditional camera.

Tell us about the music?
There are no songs in the movie. However, in the audio album of Eenadu there will be six songs composed by Sruthi Hassan. These six songs represent the tone/spirit of the movie. Sruthi Hassan did a nice job in composing songs and background music.

Are you employing any of your Hollywood technician friends in Eenadu?
DI workflow supervisor of Eenadu worked recently of Peter Jackson’s District 9. Three of DI colorists of Eenadu worked for 300 movie. VFX supervisor of Eenadu worked in Disney for 15 years. Andy Dixon who did stunt coordination worked for several movies in Hollywood. Look of the entire Eenadu movie will be different and it will be appropriate to the theme/story.

Can you sum up Eenadu in a few words?
Eenadu is a good film. It is a relevant movie made in unique format.

You worked for vfx of Hollywood films. Can you tell us the difference between work culture over there and over here?
There are defined workflow and processes in production, pre-production and post-production of movie over there. In North India, film production has become systematic where production managers are recruited from business schools. In south, that culture is yet to come. I am sure that it will change in no time in South India too.

What kind of movies do you like personally?
I like all kinds of movies. There is no genre bias in it.

Who are your favourite directors?
Alfred Hitchcock and Clint Eastwood. I love the way Clint Eastwood makes movies that connect with audiences in the past 30 years.

Are you married?
Yes. I am happily married with two kids.

What are your future projects?
I have lots of interesting story ideas. I want to direct more films.

Interview with Chaitanya Dantuluri

Chaitanya Dantuluri, the son of noted film journalist and writer D Narayana Varma is making his debut with Banam movie produced by the Three Angels Studio (Ashwini Dutt's production house). Nara Rohith, the nephew former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu's brother is being introduced as hero with Banam. Banam is all set to release on 16 September. Here are the excepts of our exclusive interview with this new breed of filmmaker -

Background:
I was raised in Chennai since I was 3 years old. My father shifted to Chennai at that time with an intention to work in films. He settled as a film journalist and worked for magazines like Vijaya Chitra and Jyothy Chitra for 20 years. He became a freelance writer for films when Telugu film industry
shifted to Hyderabad. I joined films after graduation and worked in direction department. I worked for several films in Telugu and Tamil. I learnt a lot during my work for Venkatesh's film Ganesh. I had a close association with Mani Sharma and Marthand K Venkatesh when they were at the beginning of their careers.
Why did it take so many years to become a director?
I was working for films, watching films and criticizing them. The real seriousness was started only after 5 years. I used to write stories just to impress decision makers (heroes and producers). Then I realised that I should do stories honestly. Mani Sharma told me 1 and half years back that he would produce a film in my direction if nothing works out for me. His word gave me the feeling of security. The story of Banam was written at that time. I worked for six months over that script. I narrated it to many people in 2007. I also penned another script. The producers used to like it, but used to say that it won't appeal to Telugu audiences.

I wanted to produce it on myself with funds from my friends. We started a banner called 'Start Camera Pictures'. I wanted to make an independent film. I went to the edge in February 2009. That is when I met Swapna Dutt through a common friend. I gave her a 20-minutes narration. She liked it and referred me to Ashwini Dutt. Ashwini Dutt said that he would produce the film right after listening to the story. He could able to understand and grasp the content of movie immediately. I was little skeptical about Nara Rohith because he comes from a big political family. But once I met Rohith, I am convinced that he is the hero of Banam.
Tell us about Banam?
Banam is a personal film for me. It is about ideology and traits. Banam is about a character's journey
towards it's goal. Banam is not about goal, but about the trajectory it travels on.
Technical departments:
I always feel that there should not be any separate department for dialogues. Dialogues should be the part of screenplay and story. But when I met Nagaraju Gandham (Gamyam fame), I could visualize the amount of value he could add to the movie. His contribution for Banam is fabulous. I had long association with Mani Sharma and Marthand K Venkatesh. Both of them gave their best output. Anil Bandhari is a long time friend of mine and he did cinematography.

Vyjayanthi banner is known for mass entertainer and commercial films with crazy combination. The profile of Banam movie looks very much different?
Banam is also a commercial movie
made in aesthetic way. I feel that human emotions are same and movies do well if human emotions are presented in effective manner.
What is the runtime of the movie?
It should be around two hours.

Can you tell us about Nara Rohith?
Nara Rohith is a sensible guy with a clear mind. He understood the movie well and gave the right output. He comes from a high-profile political family, but he is down to earth and casual in his approach.

Tell us about producer Seshu Priyanka Chalasani?
She is a young filmmaker and he completed her filmmaking course in USA. She is passionate about doing meaningful cinema. Banam film has limited female characters on screen. Priyanka is my first audience. And her opinion is very important. She got excited about the movie.

Are you tensed about the result?
Not at all. I have completed my job. I am not running a 100 meter routine sprint here. I am aiming at gold medal in a different category. However, I am very curious about how people will react to the movie.

Tell us about your next venture?
I have a script ready with me. I want to be an independent filmmaker. I want to have a signature of my own in my films.
