After a very long time, a Chennai girl, and that too, a Tamilian is making her debut in Bhagyaraj’s new film Siddhu plus two first attempt opposite his son Shantanoo.
As the release date of her debut film approaches, the 19-year-old dusky beauty, Chandini has butterflies in her stomach. In her first ever interview to the media Chandini says, “I’m tense as Siddhu is getting ready for release. It’s a beautiful love story and I feel blessed to be introduced by Bhagyaraj sir.”
There is a lot of curiosity surrounding Chandini as she is a Tamil girl born and brought up in Chennai. The last girl with Tamil lineage who proved to be successful was Trisha, who made her debut in 2002. Since then, Kollywood has got its heroines from Kerala or from the north. Chandini, who has lived all her life in Nungambakkam comes from an upper middle class background and finished her schooling at Church Park. She is now doing her final year Viscom at Ethiraj, Trisha’s alma mater too.
And like her senior, she too was noticed by Kollywood after being placed second at the Miss Chennai 2007 beauty pageant. Post that, she appeared in a reality show on a popular Tamil channel. It was then that she got a call from Bhagyaraj’s office asking her to come for a screen test. Says Chandini, “After the screen test, sir asked me to speak in Tamil in order to lip sync perfectly. At the end of the film, he told me that I had passed the test and asked me to dub in my own voice. I consider this a great honour for a newcomer.” In the Tamil film industry, in the last five years, after Asin, Chandini will be the first heroine to dub in her own voice.
Chandini says she has a very meaty role in Siddhu. “I did not go to any acting school, but was lucky to be groomed by Bhagyaraj sir. I play a bubbly village girl who comes to Chennai after completing her plus two.” And as far as glamour is concerned, Chandini says, “I’m quite traditional in my outlook. In Siddhu, I wear half saris as well as short skirts that are worn by girls my age. My glamour quotient has to be within my comfort level.”
She has been flooded with offers, but at the moment is very choosy and has only taken up Padithurai, which has been produced by actor Arya and directed by debutant Suka. The actress says that she has a performance-oriented role in the film. Praising his co-star, Arya says, “Mark my words, she will go places with her sparkling eyes, cool confidence and determination.” As far as competition in tinsel town is concerned, Chandini says, “I’m extremely competitive in whatever I do and will push myself to do better as competition hots up. Right now, my aim is to score well in my Viscom final semester exams which will happen in March. That apart, I’m all set to navigate the choppy waters of showbiz.”(TNN)
